TDE is beyond excited to be apart of this amazing event!
“The Spirit of Kwanzaa,” the Dance Institute of Washington’s most popular and longest-running cultural arts and dance production (since 1995), is an African American winter holiday celebration that draws on the agricultural ceremonies of Africa. The Dance Institute of Washington has adapted the principles of Kwanzaa to convey the struggles and creativity of the Black diaspora. The production highlights the holiday’s principles with dance, song, and spoken word.
This year’s cultural experience will be dynamic, joyous, and filled with creative expression—enriching the arts community at large. This invigorating performance is sure to captivate audiences through its rich storytelling, rooted in portrayals of the Black experience. Movement is power, power is a movement.

THIS WORKSHOP IS GEARED TO OFFER PARTICIPANTS THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE DYNAMITE EXPERIENCE.
EACH DAY BEGINS WITH A 90-MINUTE TECHNIQUE-STYLE CLASS THAT IS ROOTED IN MODERN, BALLET, AND PILOBOLUS IDEOLOGIES. CLASS IS DESIGNED AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE INDIVIDUAL BOUNDARIES OF SPACE AND MOVEMENT RANGE.
THE REMAINING 90 MINUTES ON DAYS 1 & 3 WILL BE A "PLAY SESSION": IN A SAFE AND COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENT, STUDENTS ARE CHALLENGED TO MAKE CHOICES THROUGH PROVIDED PHRASE WORK AS THEY EXPLORE NEW METHODOLOGIES, INTERPRET, CONNECT, AND RESPOND TO MUSICAL ELEMENTS TO ULTIMATELY UNCOVER THEIR MOVEMENT PREFERENCES.
DAY 2, THE REMAINING 90 MINUTES WILL BE A SIGNATURE DYNAMITE-STYLE PARTNERING WORKSHOP. IN ADDITION TO TRADITIONAL-STYLE TECHNIQUES THAT FORTIFY A DANCERS' ABILITY TO PARTNER, THIS CLASS EMPHASIZES PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY AND THE EFFECTIVE YET MEANINGFUL WAYS ONE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR ENVIRONMENT/COMMUNITY BY UNDERSTANDING THEIR INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS.
